“Miss Betty” was born on a farm in Rutherfordton, N.C. in 1915. She died in 1970 after a 3 year bout with cancer. Betty was the oldest of 7 children. Her Dad raised cotton, corn and whatever it took to meet his family’s day to day needs. Betty was a smart cookie. She skipped an early grade in school and graduated after the 11th year from Mount Vernon High School in Rutherfordton in 1933. We remember her saying that she worked one day in a textile mill after high school and she knew that was not for her. Instead she took at job at a vacation lodge for children in Harris, N.C. The children came to spend the summer months, much like our kids go off to summer camp. Betty assisted with the children. Next, Betty moved to Spartanburg. She worked her way up to a management position at Silver’s Dime Store. From there she took a management position at The Standard Dress Shop on Main Street in downtown Spartanburg. Fate took her on a blind date with Wade Lindsey that was arranged by Lib Moss Arthur. The rest is history. Betty and Wade were married on the campus of Textile Industrial Institute (Spartanburg Methodist College) in 1940. Miss Betty came from a family of great cooks. A family reunion at a Kiser home is a sight to behold. Many of those family recipes are used to create the food that you enjoy at Wade’s Restaurant today. |
