I started working at Wade’s at the age of thirteen. I like to say that I started as soon as I could reach the cash register. In those days it was easy to corral a new learner behind a counter that was used to check out curb hops, cash out the dining room guests and service an eating counter. I received a BA from Auburn University and a Master of Social Work Degree from the University of South Carolina. After college I accepted a position with the Charleston County Department of Social Services as an eligibility case worker and later as the supervisor of the Adult Services Unit. I was trying to decide about my future in social work when Hamp called to solicit my help at Wade’s. He had assumed the leadership of the restaurant four months earlier. We decided to become a team and started a wild and rewarding ride to develop the Wade’s Restaurant that you know today. Boyce and I married a few years after the opening of the Pinewood location. He listened to so many stories that he finally decided to join the Wade’s team, too. I love gardening. Somehow I managed to finish the Master Gardeners course in 2004. When times are good I like to fit in a tennis match or attempt to hit a golf ball. |
